These sentinels stood watch—and served a thirsty public—for years. One is gone, and the other soon will be. I gave each steady attention, waiting for the flickering moment when sunset kissed their armor in the passage from Golden to Blue Hour. Tonight, I rediscovered the joy of studying a scene, surveying a variety of compositions, then moving to the spot that felt most right. Clouds rolled over town in late afternoon, but the lid lifted just enough on the horizon to throw a splash of red on the highlights. What a gift, just as the noble fountain and proud tower have been for generations. Workers were pouring a concrete pad for the replacement tower as I worked. I haven't decided yet if I can stomach shooting the inevitable dismantling.
