Words and pictures are the essence of my daily experience, in work and play. Finding words (and meaning) in pictures grabs my attention, too.
In 2009, I was invited to document the last day of service at a local restaurant. The kitchen and back of the house spaces were tagged with messages of all sorts—doodles, poetry, food prep instructions, phone numbers, sexy thoughts about co-workers and patrons. "The End" was written in Sharpie on a table stacked with plates, an isolated and haunting farewell to a place that was beloved by staff and customers. I'm glad I got to see it.
I have a special love of marquees because the letters and lights are bold, physical and dimensional. The interplay of letters and words often is a delightful mashup of messages: "Art is murder for a king," and a subtle fatherly reference above with "DA."
It's all in the framing—and in looking up.
