I walked another cemetery this year, this time with my parents, to place flowers at the gravesite of my great uncle and aunt. They are buried beside each other at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, a place I visited for the first time today, on Memorial Day. It took us a while to find Max and Audrey's headstones, but the hunt gave us time to take in the beauty of the solemn grounds and fully appreciate the care that goes into its preservation. The weather was particularly beautiful and blessedly free of humidity, which isn't common in late May in Kansas. The sun was beginning to arc behind the hillside above us as Dad and I made our frames, a similar rush of light I witnessed many years ago during a walk in Portland's Pioneer Cemetery as the day ebbed.
